The Farm Boy Story
In December 1981, Jean-Louis and Colette Bellemare opened the first Farm Boy™ on Cumberland Street in Cornwall, Ontario. At that time, the modest 300 sq. ft. store sold only produce. The second Farm Boy was opened in February 1983 by brother Normand Bellemare in Cornwall. The store continued to grow and eventually expanded its product lines to include deli, bread, and dairy products.
In October 1984, the Bellemare Brothers joined forces to open a Farm Boy at the current Cornwall location on Sydney Street. The new 5,000 sq. ft. area allowed further expansion of the fine quality produce line and the addition of dairy, deli, cheese and meat product lines. An in-store bakery and bulk food line were soon added.
Convinced of the future growth potential of the Farm Boy concept by the success in Cornwall, the Bellemare Brothers expand to Orleans on Centrum Boulevard in 1992 and were joined by brother Daniele Bellemare in 1994.
Farm Boy's Nepean store, the largest yet, opened in February 1996 and continued to expand, opening in the heart of Ottawa on Montreal Road in the Hillside Plaza in May 1997 and in November that same year in Kanata, on Hazeldean Road. The next location opened in July 2003 in the Blossom Park area and the seventh Farm Boy store opened in December 2004 in the east end of Ottawa, in the community of Orleans. New stores were also opened in 2006 at the Blue Heron Mall on Bank Street, Barrhaven on Woodroffe Avenue, and a store on Terry Fox Drive in the Kanata Signature Centre in 2007. More stores were opened, Britannia off Richmond Road, Stittsville in 2011, Place d'Orleans and Kingston in 2012 and Train YArds in the spring of 2013.
With more opportunities ahead, Farm Boy continues to pride itself on providing the freshest products at the best possible prices. That is the core of the business and the key service that customers demand. But since the inception of Farm Boy, the Bellemare Brothers have not been satisfied with simply running a business. They consider their employees and customers as family, and take special steps to make shopping at Farm Boy a warm and fun, experience for all!
